A Vietnam News Agency correspondent in New York reported that the resolution on “International Coffee Day,” proposed by Brazil and a core group of 18 countries including Vietnam, received support from 97 UN member states, marking the largest number of co-sponsors for a draft resolution considered at the 80th UN General Assembly to date. The resolution emphasizes that coffee is not only an important agricultural product but also embodies profound cultural and social value, deeply intertwined with the lives and traditions of many countries. It also fully affirms the role of the global coffee value chain in promoting economic growth, creating sustainable employment, contributing to poverty eradication, ensuring food security, promoting gender equality, and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
As one of the world’s leading coffee producers and exporters and a member of the core drafting group for the resolution, the adoption of the “International Coffee Day” resolution by the General Assembly holds special significance for Vietnam. Vietnam actively coordinated with other countries and international partners to promote this initiative, contributing to raising global awareness of the role of the coffee industry, promoting international cooperation to develop a sustainable coffee value chain, and showcasing the image and value of Vietnamese coffee to the international community.
